Final rites are being conducted this afternoon for J. J. Land, 79-year-old pioneer of Northwest Texas and a member of the City Council in Childress for the past eight years.
Land died at 3 o'clock Monday morning in a Childress hospital after an illness of several weeks.
The services are being held at the First Baptist church, with the pastor, Rev. J. R. Grant, in charge. Burial will be in the Childress cemetery under the direction of the Newberry Funeral home.
Serving as pallbearers at the funeral are Reid B. Scott, L. G. Raney, J. M. Preston, E. B. Abington, F. F. Weddington, Claude Dudley, John Dennington and H. W. Thaten. Master Masons will be in charge of services at the cemetery and members of the Eastern Star are in charge of the flowers.
Land was born February 16, 1859 in Talapousa, Georgia, and came to this section in 1888, settling first in Hall County, then moving to Childress where he was one of the early automobile dealers. He retired from business some 12 years ago, but retained considerable property in Childress until his death.
He has served as a member of the city council since 1931.
His health has been failing for several years, but he became seriously ill only about a month ago.
Survivors include the widow, two daughters, Mrs. J. J. Cathey of Childress and Mrs. Lee Williams of Grand Junction, Colo.: a son, W. R. Land of Rhome; three brothers, L. Z. Land of Hedley, C. Land of Memphis, and Dick Land of Avoca, Ark; a sister, Mrs. Lee Meadows of White Deer and 12 grandchildren.
