Nena taught first grade in Marion, Kansas before she married.

Wife of Rev. Avery Holmes Dickerson. Avery and Nena moved every one or two years with M. E. Church assignments of churches. He was received on Credentials to the M. E. Church, South, Ok., conference. 1912 Kremlin; 1913-14 Pond Creek; 1915 Wakita; Central Illinois Conference 1916 Sheffield and Mineral; 1917-19 Tiskilwa; 1920-21 Oneida; 1922-23 Cuba; 1924-30 Varna; 1931-34 Neponset; 1935-41 Joy; 1942-44 Wenona; 1945-46 West Jersey; 1947-49 Hamilton. In 1950 Rev. Avery Holmes Dickerson retired, and they finally stayed until their death.

Nena wrote this prayer about moving:

Dear Lord, I do not know about eternity---
Just where it is or how will Heaven be.
But this I pray--of wood or cloud or stone--
Oh, let me have a little corner for my own!
I've moved into so many houses in these years,
Have scrubbed so many boards and chandeliers,
So many sinks and pantries, tubs and kitchen doors,
So many halls and porches, walls and kitchen floors.
And when each room was home and clean and sweet
The process in some other house I must repeat.

The church congregation in Varna, Illinois liked Rev. Dickerson and his family so much that they plead with the district superintendent to let Avery Holmes Dickerson and his family stay for six years. This was unheard of, but the church was growing and contributed financially to the district.
