"Thede" was a shoemaker by trade and for a good many years was village constable, county constable, and license inspector for West Wellington. His death in December 1899 at the age of 45 was tragic. He had been bitten by a dog, afflicted with rabies, in November, and had been to the Pasteur Institute in New York for treatment. He had returned home, apparently well and had resumed his duties at the assizes in Guelph. He drove home, by horse and cutter, to Drayton, exposed to an intensely cold wind. A few days later he came down with hydrophobia, and died on December 19th. He too was a stalwart member and Past Master of Conestoga Lodge, A.F. & A.M. His wife was Ellen Harper, of Mount Forest District, and their family were: Jas. Adam, John A. who died in Medicine Hat, Alta, Gertrude (Mrs. Rev. Frank Stacey) and William. All are deceased.
