John Hensler, 85 Years Old, Dead at Home of Daughter, Mrs. B.N. French
John Hensler, an old and respected resident, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. B.N. French, 212 Cottage Avenue, at four o'clock this morning. His health has been failing for the past four months with hardening of the arteries. His final illness, too, had much the nature of a general breakdown which made quick inroads on his strength owing to his advanced age.
John Hensler was born in Altensteich, Wurttenberg, Germany, April 23, 1831, and died in Galesburg, November 16, 1916. He came to America when a lad of 15 years and spent his early life with his brother in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 1854 he went to Chicago to live and that same year entered the employ of the C.B. & Q. railroad. With Leonard Dienonefer, a lifelong friend, he helped others to lay the track from Aurora to Galesburg. The deceased remained in the employ of the "Q" until the year 1904.
His marriage to Mrs. Emma Bloss took place October 12th, 1862, in Galesburg. In December of the same year, the couple moved to Yates City, where Mr. Hensler lived until 1906. At that time he came to Galesburg to make his home with his daughters, Mrs. B.N. French and Mrs. A.C. Davis. His wife died March 11th, 1902.
He was a devoted father and was held in high esteem by many friends. The German Lutheran Church in Galesburg claims him as a member. He belonged to the Yates City A.F. and A.M. No. 448 and to the Eureka Chapter No. 98, O.E.S. in that same city. There are left to mourn his four daughters, Mrs. J.K. Montgomery of Denver, Colorado, Mrs. Ed Crabill of Hillyard, WA, Mrs. French and Mrs. Davis of Galesburg, and one son, Frank, also of this city. In addition two step-daughters, Mrs. Lizzie Patton of Neponset, Mrs. J.B. Coykendall of Yates City, survive him. One son, William, died May 22, 1890.
Funeral services will be held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. French, 212 Cottage Avenue, Saturday morning at 9:30 o'clock. Rev. C.A. Alden will be in charge. After the service, the body will be taken to Yates City where they will be interred in the family lot.
His two daughters, Mrs. J.K. Montgomery of Denver, and Mrs. Ed Crabill, of Washington, will be here to attend the funeral.
