George was born February 1855 to James Lawrence and Laura Colston in Cambridge, Maryland. George worked as a salesman in dry goods.

In 1900, he spent some time at the Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia. He could no longer work due to his illness and moved in with his brother Thomas.
