Warren E. Burkhart Sr., 89, Muhlenberg Township, died Friday morning, Jan. 7, 2011, in The Reading Hospital & Medical Center. He was the widower of Elizabeth I. (Gerhart) Burkhart, who died on April 22, 1984. Born in Bowmansville, Lancaster County, on Oct. 11, 1921, he was a son of the late John J. and Katie (Bowman) Burkhart.

Warren graduated from Reading High School, class of 1939. He lettered in track and field and baseball. He was a member of the Temple Fire Company and the National Association of Retired & Veteran Railway Employees Inc., Moberly, Mo. Warren retired in 1980 from Conrail, the former Reading Railroad, last working in the power plant /Reading car shop division. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the 313th Field Artillery during World War II. He was a member of Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church, Muhlenberg Township.

Survivors include his son, W. Eugene Burkhart Jr., Blandon; brother, Ronald L. Burkhart, Mohrsville; and sister, Lorraine, widow of Walter Impink, Leesport.
He was predeceased by his sister, Arlene Wise, on Oct. 4, 1978. Private graveside services will be in Becker's St. Peter's Cemetery with the Rev. Gerald Arndt officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to Milkins Giles Funeral Home Inc., Temple.
