The Middleway vicinity lost a useful citizen by the death of Mr. Thomas F. M. Southard, who passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wm. P. Boyd, near Summit Point, Monday afternoon. Mr. Southard had been in failing health for a year or more. The tragic death of a daughter, Mrs. Fannie Crawford, two years ago bore heavily upon him, the weakening of his strength being plainly discernible from that time. Mrs. Crawford died from burns sustained when her clothing took fire while she was aiding one of her neighbors at butchering time. Mr. Southard, who was 75 years old, came to this county from Stanley, Va. nearly 50 years ago. All the years since his coming here, until the infirmities of age impaired his usefulness, he operated a blacksmith shop, doing work for the farmers of that portion of the county. Mrs. William P. Boyd is his only daughter. Rev. A. B. Mitchell, rector of Nelson Parish, Middleway, conducted the funeral services in Grace Church, Middleway, Wednesday afternoon. Interment was in Masonic Cemetery, Middleway. Source: Farmers Advocate, Vol. XXXVII No.1, Charles Town, Jefferson County, W. VA,, Saturday, February 5, 1921, Page 1 , Column 3, CROSSING THE BAR
