When Simon was 10 years old he moved with his parents to Kenyon, MN, where he resided until 1876. He then joined the army, fighting the Sioux Indians in Western Minnesota and the Dakotas. In 1862-63 he enlisted in the First Minnesota Mounted Rangers, Company M (Cavalry) under the command of Gen. H. H. Sibley. After receiving his discharge in the spring of 1864, Simon enlisted in the Civil Way in Company E, First Minnesota Heavy Artillery. He served at Fort Edwin at Chattanooga until his discharge in 1865, receiving his honorable discharge at Fort Snelling. Simon was then in the lumber business in Wisconsin and Michigan before coming west to Sherman County, OR, in 1876. On May 17, 1881, he married Miss Emma Jones Long. They farmed for 20 years and then were in the mercantile business for 12 years. After that they moved to Roseville, CA, where they resided on Riverside Avenue for 4 years until Simon's passing after a two week illness. He was Roseville's only remaining GAR veteran, and at his request the services were conducted by the George A. Marshall Camp No. 89, US War Veterans, assisted by members of Alyn W. Butler Post No. 169 of The American Legion.
