As a young man in Las Vegas, John was involved in many aspects of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was proud to have been a member of the United States Marine Corp during World War II. He was a very patriotic man and had a great love for his country and the flag which represents the values for which this country stands. He was very active in the local American Legion Post.
He sacrified the warmth of the Las Vegas sun to brave the cold winters of central Utah to be near his children and their growing families. The simple pleasures of a family barbeque or a piano recital for a grandchild brought him the greatest joy. His bookshelves were lined with his greatest treasures—books about extraordinary men and pictures of his children and grandchildren. He thrived on each of our accomplishments and sorrowed in our disappointments. He will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.
John is survived by his wife, Loessa, Manti; sons: Franklin Timothy (Robin) Greenhalgh, Salt Lake City; Clint (Kumiko) Greenhalgh, Manti; daughters: Lisa (James) Rhodes, Centerfield; Anna Ruzicka, Las Vegas, Nevada; Cindy (Brent) Simmons) Manti; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; brothers, C. Clifford Calhoon, Raymond L. Calhoon, and Kenneth W. Calhoon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Celesta, Joyce, Waunita, and Patricia; brothers, Charles, Francis, and Daniel; granddaughter, Shannan Lee Carmody. A sister, Shirley, passed away just one day after his death.
