Leon H. Ermoian, 89, a civil engineer who helped design the city's subway system, died Wednesday in Evanston Hospital.
Before he retired in 1968, the Skokie resident was an electrical and mechanical engineer for the city of Chicago for nearly 30 years.
A series of reports between 1937 and 1939 outlined a system of subways and superhighways to and from downtown that could handle the increasing demand for transportation. Mr. Ermoian was part of the team that designed the subway segment. While expressway construction was postponed because of the war, the State Street subway was opened in 1943.
"He was on the original first car with the mayor when the line was opened," said his son Richard.
Mr. Ermoian, a native of Fresno, Calif., grew up in Chicago and was a multi-sport athlete throughout his school days. As president of the Armenian Youth Foundation, he coached local basketball and baseball teams that won national titles.
In addition to his son, he leaves his wife, Nazle; another son, Harry; a brother, Suren; a sister, Beatrice Bynderian, and a grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today Haben Funeral Home, 8057 Niles Center Rd., Skokie. Burial will be in Irving Park Cemetery, 7777 W. Irving Park.
