Nathaniel and Amanda Cudd were married on January 5, 1858 in Itawamba County, MS. They had one daughter, Leona Cordelia Ray, born in November of 1858. Amanda died from complications arising from giving birth.

Corporal Ray served in B Company of the the 12th Battalion of the Mississippi Cavalry, which became the 10th Regiment of the Mississippi Cavalry, C.S.A.

Records indicate that he was a private upon entering service and a private when he was discharged. However, the Civil War Prisoner of War Records list him as a Corporal.
