He was born May 11, 1927 in Highland Park to the late Helen and Joseph Cummings.
Gale Cummings was survived by his wife of 57 years, Janet Cummings, whom he married on September 26, 1953 in Royal Oak; daughters Carolyn Cummings and Susan (John) Austermann; grandsons Johnny Austermann, Jason Austermann and Jake Austermann.
He was preceded in death by his sister Joanne Kozlow.
Gale was a Automobile Mechanic at Vinsetta Garage in Berkley from July 1944 until August 1945 when he was inducted into the U.S. Navy to serve one year during WWII. He was then called from inactive duty to serve another honorable four years and eight months in the Navy during the Korean War. Following the Navy, Gale worked as a Service Manager for Oldsmobile Dealerships. He retired at age 62 from Central Oldsmobile in Hamtramck to then work another 15 years at both the Royal Oak Golf Course and Normandy Golf Course as the Starter and the Ranger.
During his life he enjoyed travel, golf, and even boat racing in the "D Class" when he was young. Gale belonged in the Nomads Travel Group and the Berkley Masonic Lodge #536. Gale also found time to volunteer with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Masonic Temple Theater and the Detroit Zoo.
