James Boulger married Ellen O'Rourke in 1850. He came to Minnesota in 1858. He and Ellen raised a family in Northfield, MN. They had 12 children: Jennie Boulger (1856–1880), Christopher Boulger (1859 – 1929), Julia (1860–1861), John B. (1861 – 1934), Richard D. (1863–1913), Alice B. Dougherty (1865–1957), Edward C. (1867-?), James W. (1869–1960), and Nellie C. Boulger (1872–1951)

James Boulger, of Waterford, died Friday, Oct. 23, at his home in that village, at the age of eighty years. Mr. Boulger was a native of Ireland and came to the United States when a young man. He took up land at Waterford in 1863 and, with the exception of several years residence in Faribault has since made his home at the place. The children who survive him are: Mrs. Thomas Dougherty of Starkweather, ND, Miss Nellie, Christopher and Richard Boulger of Waterford, John of Starkweather, ND and Jay of Minot, ND. The remains were brought to Faribault Monday Morning and were laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery beside those of Mrs. Boulger, Ellen O’Roark Boulger, his deceased wife.

James Boulger was born in Ireland in 1831. When seventeen years old, came to America, remaining one season at Auburn, New York, then to Ohio until 1853, employed as railroad contractor, then to Fort Wayne, Indiana, in same business. In 1858, came to Minnesota and contracted for work on the railroad which passes through Waterford, for which, however, he has never received full pay. In 1862, he purchased his present farm. Married in 1850, Miss Ellen O'Roark, of Ohio, who died in 1871, at Waterford. They had twelve children, the living are: Christopher, John, Richard, Alice, Edward, James and Ellen.
