Dan A. Bliznik, 62, passed away Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010, as the result of a traffic accident near Gilroy.
He was born Sept. 20, 1947, and was raised in Chicago. After high school graduation in 1965, Dan enlisted in the U.S. Navy and attended Navy Hospital Corpsman School in California. He later transferred to the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines in Viet Nam where he was assigned patrol duty. He became, to all appearances, a Marine, which he was very proud of. In Viet Nam during the Tet Offensive of 1968, Dan's right leg was shattered in combat. In 1970, after more than 20 surgeries, his leg was amputated above the knee.
Following his Naval discharge, Dan became Head Dialysis Technician at Northwestern and the University of Chicago. After graduating from Viterbo College with a degree in Accounting, he began working as a civilian accountant with the Department of Defense where he held various positions including time in Japan. After a 25-year career, Dan retired in 2006 as Director of DFAS in Seaside. While there, he had a six-month posting in Iraq with the Army Corps of Engineers as an accountant.
Survivors: Dan is survived by his wife, Susan; his step-children, Garrett and Sierra; his first wife, Barbara Bliznik; his sister, Linda (Michael) O'Mahoney; his children, Ryan (fiancée, Lisa) Bliznik, Megan (Heath) Valley, Paul (fiancée, Renee) Bliznik and Kyle Bliznik and his grandchildren, Zachary and Olivia Valley and nieces and nephew, Jean, Michael and Maura.
Memorial services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at Ord Military Chapel on the Ord Military Community.
