Valerian (Shorty) Thomas Branchaud, of Suffolk, passed from this life on August 20, 2010. Though small in stature, he was large in the hearts of family and friends. He was the son of the late Irving J. and Julia V. Branchaud and born on November 17, 1925 in White Earth, MN. He was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary R. Branchaud; sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph (Patricia Collier), Gary (Brenda), Glenn (Lisa) and Phillip (Merri); grandchildren, Alexandra Bartlett, Jacob Branchaud, Kelly Brooks, Krissy Ralston, Ryan, Jason and Justin Chavis, and Katrina Branchaud; great grandchildren, Adam Ralston and Alexia Warren; and a sister, Mae Audrey Cobenais.

He was a World War II veteran of the U. S. Navy serving aboard the USS Enterprise CV6 in the South Pacific and the USS Midway CV41 post War War II. Val was a welder/machinist and was co-owner of Kimberly Welding and Machine Works (formerly Beck's Welding). He was a member of St. Mary's of the Presentation Catholic Church in Suffolk.

A Memorial Service, with military honors, will be held on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, with Rev. Michael D. Halley officiating. Friends may join the family on Monday evening from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Parr Funeral Home and Crematory, 3515 Robs Drive, Suffolk for visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary's Mission School, P. O. Box 189, Highway 1, Red Lake, MN 56671. Condolences may be registered online at www.parrfuneralhome.com
