Mr. Carl Edd Abernathy, age 87, of Blue Ridge, GA passed away Monday, August 24, 2009 at home. Carl Edd was born on April 22, 1922 in Polk County, TN, to the late Luther H. and Elizabeth Ann Hamlin Abernathy. He was a deacon and member of Epworth First Baptist Church and was preceded in death by brothers, Frank George Abernathy, L.H. Abernathy and Robert Abernathy, sisters, Lina Steppe, Sally Myatt and Nellie Stillwell.

Survivors include: wife, Laura Abernathy, daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Michael Helton of Cherry Log, son & daughter-in-law, George Luther and Sonja Abernathy of Australia, son and daughter-in-law, William and Lisa Abernathy of Mason, Ohio, daughter and son-in-law, Mary Elizabeth and Tom Stager of Flowery Branch; brother and sister-in-law Charles and Marguerite Abernathy of Epworth, sisters and brother-in-law, Elizabeth Ann and Lewis Simonds of Epworth, sisters, Edith Sue Akridge of Knoxville, Lena Rose Earley of Blue Ridge, brother, Harry Abernathy of Blue Ridge, grandchildren, Sarah Katherine Coleman, Brandon James Helton, Christopher Ryan Abernathy, Scott Michael Abernathy, step-grandchildren, Alex Vavasour, Tamara Vavasour, great-grandchildren, Tristian Chastain and Kayleigh Ann Coleman. Survivors also include nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 28 at 4:00 PM from the Epworth First Baptist Church, and Mr. Abernathy will lie in-state from 3:30 P.M. until time of service. Dr. Tom Jordan will be officiating. Music will be provided by Doug Simonds and Tammy Mason. Pallbearers will be Brandon James Helton, Christopher Ryan Abernathy, Scott Michael Abernathy, Kenneth Martin, Tom Stager and Michael Helton. Honorary Pallbearers, Deacons Epworth First Baptist. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors by the North George Honor Guard with Tapps by Macy Corbin. The family will receive friends at the Finch-Cochran Funeral Home Thursday evening 6-9 P.M. Donations may be made to the Morganton Mountain Town Baptist Assn. for the Retire the Debt Fund, P.O. Box 1167 Blue Ridge, GA 30513.
