In 1906, at the age of seven, Minnie's family moved south of Guide Rock, where she attended rural schools. At an early age she and her sisters sang for church and social gatherings. Music and singing were special to the family.
She was united in marriage with Joe A. Shaffer on June 15, 1916 at her parents home south of Guide Rock, the minister being her father's brother. Their family consisted of two children, a son Opal and daughter, Neva. Together Minnie and Joe became members of the Christian Church in 1935, at Hillsboro, Oregon.
During their sixty-four years of marriage they worked at many interesting professions together. They started their married life on a farm south of Guide Rock. Later they picked hops, strawberries and bean in Oregon; they had a bakery in Guide Rock; they were cooks at the State Hospital in Kearney; they cooked for a fraternity house in Lincoln; operated a cream and egg buying station in Guide Rock. One time they ran a herd of wild horses from the Nebraska Sand Hills to Guide Rock. Between jobs they seemed to gravitate back to the farm. Whatever job they had to do, it was together. Time spent with her family was her life. In later years she enjoyed playing cards and visiting with her neighbors and friends at Parkview and Heritage in Red Cloud.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Joe on February 22, 1981; eight siblings and a great grandchild.
Left to cherish her memory are her son Opal Shaffer and wife Vernice Curtis, Nebraska; daughter Neva Hunter and husband Dean of Guide Rock; grandchildren: Gloria McGooden and husband Mike, Terry Shaffer and wife Laura, Randy Hunter and wife Sheila, and Cindy Fredrickson and husband Kenneth; 13 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
