Retired Lambertville Police Chief Frank P. Masterson Jr. died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009 at his home. He was 95.
He was born in Jersey City, a son of Francis P. Masterson Sr. and Annette Green Masterson.
A longtime resident of Lambertville, Frank served in the Navy during World War II. He was involved in community and human services for some 66 years. He was a rural mail carrier for the Ringoes Post Office for 30 years. He was a driving force to found the Lambertville Rescue Squad in 1946. He started working as a part-time Lambertville patrolman in 1948, became fulltime later, worked his way up and retired as chief in 1978.
He served on the executive committee of the Hunterdon Drug Awareness Program for many years; the organization last month voted to name him "founder emeritus." He and other civic leaders pushed to establish a drug counseling center after Lambertville and surrounding towns suffered 12 drug-related deaths in the early 1970s. A drug treatment agency called NARCO opened a Lambertville branch in 1977 and 3 years later Hunterdon Drug Awareness was formed as an independent agency, now based in Flemington. He served on the HDAP board from the beginning.
He served on a committee to establish the Hunterdon County Police Chiefs Association and in 1966 began searching for funding to establish a county-wide police radio system. It was realized 10 years later with the creation of a 9-1-1 telephone system and central dispatchers for police, fire and rescue personnel.
He served as a city councilman in the 1980s.
He served as a board member of the United Way of Hunterdon County, and had served on the county Human Services Advisory Council for more than 20 years. He was a longtime trustee of the Phillips-Barber Memorial Hospital Fund in Lambertville, was longtime member of the Lambertville Boat Club and was an avid outdoorsman.
His wife, Marie Wooden Masterson, died earlier, as did two brothers, Robert Masterson and John Masterson; a sister, Annette Perrine; and a grandson, Eric Allen Masterson.
He is survived by two sons, Frank P. Masterson III and his wife Patricia of West Amwell Township and Michael Masterson and his wife Vicki of Boise, Idaho; two daughters and sons- in-law, Marie Clark and her husband William of Southport, N.C. and Michele Howarth and her husband James of Hopewell; two brothers, Joseph Masterson of West Amwell Township and Harry Masterson of Ewing Township; a sister, Margaret Giordano of Ewing Township; his grandchildren, Keith Masterson, Kathleen Petrucci, Christopher Masterson and his fiance Danielle Ohmen, Susan Masterson, Megan Masterson, Jimmy Howarth and Lauren Howarth; his great-grandchildren, Keith, Haley and Tara Masterson and Sophia and Ryan Petrucci; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 13 at 11 a.m. at the Garefino Funeral Home, 12 N. Franklin St. (Route 179), Lambertville. Burial will follow in the Harbourton Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions can be made to Hunterdon Home Care, 2100 Wescott Drive or Hunterdon Drug Awareness, 8 Main St., Suite 7, both Flemington 08822 or the Lambertville-New Hope Rescue Squad, Box 237, Lambertville 08530.
