Scores of orphans at the East Lake Orphanage and Catholics throughout Birmingham today were mourning the death of Father John O'Kelly, 68, for many years Chaplain at the East Lake Institution who died Sunday afternoon at his residence and who will be buried Wednesday morning.
Vigil for the beloved clergyman will be arranged tonight at 8 o'clock at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, where Holy Name Society men will convene and sing "The Rosary" and pay tribute to Father O'Kelly.
For the past eight years he was chaplain at the East Lake Orphanage, coming here from Montgomery, where he was dean. He also is the former pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Southside.
His body will lie in state from 4 pm today, until 10 am Wednesday, when rites are set. The Rt. Rev. E. L. Sands will officiate. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery with Ridout directing.
Surviving are one brother and two sisters, all of Ireland, Father O'Kelly's native land. He has been engaged in this diocese for more than forty years.
Persons at East Lake Orphanage this morning said the scheduled orphan's picnic this afternoon would be held [the annual fundraising event held each Labor Day in Birmingham].
