He was the father of ten children.
In the mid 1840's he had farmed and worked the mines near Mineral Point, IL. Around 1848, he moved to Clayton Co, IA where he lost his claim to land. In 1853, he moved to Illyria Twp., Fayette Co, IA on the river near Fry Bridge - at one point he had to race to the land office to file his claim ahead of a rival. He farmed and improved this land till his death in 1908.
He and wife were cripples in last years of life - the result of their team of horses pulling their wagon/buggy over a 42 foot cliff.
They were members of the United Brethren Church with his wife being the first baptized in the Volga River.
