Sylvanus, listed as a "basketmaker" on the local census, was a free black man who owned $200.00 worth of real estate in the town of Easton, Connecticut.

Sylvanus and wife Delia, had twelve children: Elbert, Wakeman, Aaron, Henry, Major, Abraham, Charlie, William, Francis, Moses, Fanny and Arity. It is not known if Delia was his first (and only) wife; it's possible Delia may not be the mother of all twelve children.

The year of Sylvanus's birth varies; the local 1850 census records his year of birth as 1787, while the census lists 1793.

Sylvanus and Delia are presumed to be buried in Den Cemetery with their children, Aaron and Arity, but no markers survive to attest to this. Den Cemetery is Easton's first integrated cemetery, dating from the 1820s.
