A Civil War veteran of brief duration, he enlisted in response to the Gettysburg crisis and mustered into state service July 4, 1863, as a private with Co. F, 47th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company August 13, 1863.
He married Elizabeth A. Thompson in 1874, and fathered Levi (b. ?). In 1880, he was living in Honeybrook, Chester County, and by 1900, in West Caln Township, Chester County. He died at his son's home from "acute cardiac dilatation" with "chronic endocarditis with mitral stenosis" a contributing factor. His pension index spells his surname "Engleth," and it may actually have been "Englerth."
