John was the son of David Blocher and Mary (Clark) Blocher. He was married three times. His first wife was Mary (Robbins) Blocher (1833-1893). They were married on August 2, 1849. He had at least eight children with Mary including: William Edward, Ashbel Willard, James, Alice, George, Andrew, Jason and Victoria Blocher. John's second wife was Sarah A. (Prince) Taylor Blocher (1859-1896). John and Sarah were married on November 19, 1893. After Sarah died, John married his third wife, Mercy (Knox) Ward Ruede Blocher (1842-1902). John and Mercy were married February 16, 1897 in Scott County, Indiana.
John was a Veteran of the Civil War. He fought in Company A, 40th Indiana Infantry Volunteers. He was also a member of the G.A.R. and a Freemason
