James Byrd was a Constable in Kingston, Oklahoma. He died in the line of duty at age 42. Constable Byrd was patrolling the annual county picnic. While standing on a street corner, a man walked up to him, grabbed his service weapon out of his holster, and struck him in the head several times with it, causing a fractured skull. He died three days later from the unprovoked assault. Constable Byrd was survived by his wife and three sons.
