A fire of undetermined origin took the life of Mrs. Sidney Evans Lane, 65, 220 Bays Ave., Morehead, 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
Firemen said the blaze was confined to a rear addition of the two-story, brick home. Reportedly the room was a den where Mrs. Lane slept.
The body was found within three feet of a side door, a pillow clutched over her head, Coronor Jim Barker pronounced Mrs. Lane dead at the scene with the official cause as smoke inhalation.
City Police Officers Mike Kash and Bob Criswell were at the site two minutes after the call came to the police department. They said they attempted to rouse any occupants but with no response.
Nineteen firemen responded to the call and remained at the scene for almost four hours.
Mrs. Evans was a native of Morgan County, the daughter of the late Drew and Lucy Thompson Evans.
She was a member of the Morehead United Methodist Church, Morehead Book Club, Painted Hills Garden Club, Sewing Club, Rowan County Home Economists Club, Methodist Missionary Society and was nominated Woman of The Year by the Morehead Lions Club.
Survivors include three sons; Thomas E. Hinton, Woodbridge, VA, William C. Lane III, Kannapolis, NC,and Drew Evans Lane, Morehead; one brother, Eldon T. Evans, Morehead; one sister Mrs. Gladys E. McCartney, Flemingsburg and eight grandchildren.
Services were Tuesday, Feb. 19, at The United Methodist Church in Morehead with the Rev. Larry Buskirk and the Rev. Harold Tatman officiating. Burial was in the Lee Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bert Collins, Woodrow Thompson, W. H. Layne, Cecil Landreth, Alpha Hutchinson, Randall C. Wells Robert Anderson, Herman Brown and George Carlos Hill.
Northcutt and Son Home for Funerals were in charge of arrangements.
