Richard Henry Barker, 82, formerly of Devonshire Estates, Lenox, died Saturday, January 15, 2011 at Providence Care Center of Lenox.
Born in Pittsfield on May 31, 1928, the son of Lester A. and Bertha Deloye Barker, he was a 1946 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
A Korean War veteran, he enlisted with the United States Navy on September 28, 1948, served seventeen months in the Korean War Zone aboard the USS Bataan CVL-29, was awarded the Korean Service Medal with star, and was honorably discharged on September 2, 1952.
Mr. Barker was employed by General Electric Plastics in Pittsfield for thirty years and held positions as Manager of Product Development and Manager of Quality Control. While at G.E., he received a patent for the removal of asbestos as a filler in phenolic molding materials, and was nominated for the Gerald Philippe award in 1977 and 1979. He was employed eight years with Plastics Engineering Company in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, as manager of Quality Assurance, and while there was a member of the Society of Plastics Engineers, Milwaukee Section. He served on the Technical Standards Committee, Phenolics Division of Society of Plastics Industries from 1984 to 1990.
Mr. Barker wrote and presented many papers for the Society of Plastics Industries on the subject of plastic materials under stress load while at elevated temperatures. One of these papers originally presented at the Thermoset Technical Conference at the University of Wisconsin, had requests for mailings from over seventy counties. Another, initially presented at an S.P.I. conference in Cincinnati, Ohio, was published by RAPRA in the United Kingdom.
He was a communicant of St. Agnes Church in Dalton. Mr. Barker was a member of the Dalton Lions Club for twenty-four years, serving as Secretary for three terms, Second Vice President, and two terms as Club President. He also served on Lions District 33Y as a member of the Governor's Cabinet as Chairman of Hearing Conservation. He was named a Melvin Jones Fellow by the International Association of Lions Clubs in 1997 for humanitarian service.
While living in Wisconsin, he was a member of the Sheboygan Noon Lions Club for eight years. He was Scoutmaster of Troop 4 in Dalton for eleven years and counseled fifteen scouts in their quest for the Eagle Scout Award.
The Appalachian District presented him with the District award of Merit and Honor in 1979 and the Great Trails Council bestowed The Silver Beaver Award on him in 1980. He was awarded the Dalton Rotary Club service plaque in 1978. In 1980, he was awarded the eighth annual Gib Kittredge award for service to youth. He was also active in the Band Parents Association at Wahconah High School in the 1970s. He had been active in many of the programs at Devonshire Estates.
Mr. Barker's wife, the former T. Mildred Johnson, whom he married on September 6, 1958 in St. Mark's Church in Pittsfield, died June 22, 1999.
He is survived by a son, Thomas R. Barker of Boston, Massachusetts, and Washington, DC; two daughters, Nancy A. Krupowies of Tolland, Connecticut, and Anne M. Barker, of Chicopee, Massachusetts; and a grandson, Andrew Krupowies of Tolland, Connecticut; as well as a sister, Elaine B. Plumb and her husband, Arthur, of Lenox and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, January 21, 2011, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Agnes Church in Dalton, celebrated by Rev. Christopher A . Malatesta, Pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Pittsfield.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME in Dalton.
