NEWPORT NEWS - Acie David Elliott, 88, who has gone to be with the Lord, passed away on Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, at Sentara Careplex, after a lengthy battle with cancer.
He was born April 12, 1922, in Nicholas, S.C., to Elmore and Vera Callihan Elliott. He retired from the Hydraulic Machine Shop at Newport News Shipbuilding after 30 plus years of service. He was a member of Parkview Church of God for more than 60 years and played guitar in the church music department for over 50 years. He was a kind, soft spoken, and gentle man who loved his family and his church.
He was preceded in death by his sons, David Ray Elliott and Kenneth James Elliott both of Newport News; daughters, Joyce Ann Jackson of North Carolina and Patricia Shelly of Georgia; sisters, Ada Wild of Newport News and Thedis Jones of North Carolina.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 47 years, Virginia; his children, Ronald Elliott and wife, Retta, of Hampton, Betty Jo Hulbert and husband, Tom, of Michigan, and Barbara Jackola of Newport News; one brother, Clarence Elliott of Georgia; 16 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and several great-great grandchildren.
He will be missed by all who knew him, but memories are a gift of God that death cannot erase.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at the funeral home with the Rev. Mark Hambrick officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
