British motion picture producer and director. He made scores of films, many of them, including "Nell Gwynn" (1934), "Victoria, The Great" (1937), and "Nurse Edith Cavell" (1939) starring Anna Neagle, whom he married in 1943. He introduced such stars as Charles Laughton, Dame Sybil Thorndyke, and Herbert Marshall to the screen. He earned four American Academy Awards and a Venice film festival gold cup.
