DEATH OF MR. ELI BROAD

By the death of Mr. Eli Broad, which took place at his residence, Station Street, Penrith, on Saturday, the Nepean district loses one of its best known and most interesting identities, and one possessed of many estimable traits. Deceased had been a sufferer for many years, and of late his ailment had taken heavy toll on his constitution, but his genial disposition was a great asset to him, and enabled him to face the inevitable philosophically. He will be sadly missed by many, for his companionship was greatly valued because of his interesting personal attainments and coversation, enhanced by many years of wide experience.

Mr. Broad, who was 67 years of age, was born near Tavistock, England, being the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Broad, afterward of Penrith. When he was five years of age he went with his parents to Spain, hs father's duties at the Tharsis mines, Heulva, detaining the family in the country for 13 years. During this time young Eli received his education in Spain, and acquired such knowledge of the language and customs of the Spaniards as enabled him to write so authentically of the country in later years. In 1882 the family returned to England, and in 1883 came to Australia. Shortly afterward deceased joined the railway service at Penrith, and continued therein till 14 years ago, when he retired owing to ill health. At the time of retirement, he was chief timekeeper in the electrical engineer's office.

On 22nd December, 1893, at Dubbe, Mr. Broad married Miss Agnes Ann Don, eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Don, of Wellington, Rev. J. T. Main being the officiating minister.

Deceased had a distinguished Masonic career, and he was exceedingly well versed in matters pertaining to the craft. He was initiated in Lodge Hiram, No. 41, New South Wales constitution, on 20th March, 1883. Soon after he attained the M. M. degree, he commenced to write and translate for craft journals. Many of his contributions appear in the Masonic press of Australia, Spain, and America, his labors receiving the commendation of Masons in those countries. The "American Tyler" 37 years ago, in making lengthy reference to Mr. Broad, quoted him as stating, "Mine has been a labor of love, for I have never received payment for any of my articles, but I cherish the principles of the order to that extent that I willingly devote my talents to the advancement of Masonery." In its comment the paper stated: "He is a true and sincere Master Mason of whom the craft universal should be justly proud. The antipodes has able men in the institution, but we wonderfully miss our guess if Bro. Eli Broad does not yet stand peculiarly high in office among his brethren and fellows." In 1903 deceased became Worshipful Master of Lodge Nepean. He was also a member of the Royal Arch Chapter, and honorary member of the Grand Spanish Independent Symbolic Lodge (Cadiz). He was honorary member of the Sovereign Symbolic Grand Lodge of Spain (Madrid), the Australian representative of the Grand Symbolic Diet of the United States. In 1899 Mr. Broad published a book of Masonic poems, which were widely read by the members of the fraternity. He wrote and translated for Spain and America for over 40 years, and for many years represented Costa Rica on the Grand Lodge of New South Wales. Mr. Broad was a member of the Druids for over 40 years.

His wide experience had made him friends in many parts of the world, and his correspondence went far abroad. He had journalistic talents of no mean order, and his many contributions to the columns of the "Nepean Times" have been widely read and enjoyed. As a conversationalist it was always a great pleasure to meet him, and as he possessed the best essentials of friendship it was natural that he stood high in regard of the the many people of the community.

His mother died on 24th March, 1909, and his father on 3rd May, 1912. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Venita (Mrs. Roger Pearson, Penrith), and two grandchildren. His only sister, Mrs. Kyle, died in 1921, and her husband (Mr. Issac Kyle) only three months ago. Mrs. Laura Nelson, of Baxley [?] a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Kyle, is the nearest living relative of deceased with the exception of his wife and daughter.

Mr. Broad was very musical, and played string and brass instruments. He was a member of the Penrith Band of years ago, taking part in various concerts. For many years he was organist of Penrith Presbyterian Church.

The funeral took place on Monday. Rev. Jas. Barr conducted a service at the house and afterward the remains were conveyed to Rookwood [?] by motor and cremated, Rev. Jas. Barr conducting another short service. The funeral was largely attended, many Masonic brethren being among the mourners. The ashes were brought back to Penrith and buried in the grave of deceased's father and mother, in St. Stephen's cemetery. Rev. H. N. Powys conducting the service. A number of beautiful wreaths were forwarded, representing the following: - Wife, Venita and Roger (daughter and son-in-law), Keith and Margaret (grandchildren, Laura (niece), Lodge Nepean, Rev. Jas Barr and family, Presbyterian Church (ladies), Miss De Gill, Nurse Judges, Mrs. A. Pearson, Mr. and Mrs. H. Smith, Mr. W. Mitchell and family, Mr. Earp and family, Mr. and Mrs. Davies, Mr. and Mrs. N. Burrows, Mrs. Bronger, Mr. Cecil Horstman and family, Mrs. Strickland and family, Mr. Rob Rolston, and staff of "Nepean Times."
