BENNINGTON - Raymond P. Betit, 86, died Jan. 19, 2011, at his residence, following a brief illness.

Born in Bennington April 28, 1924, he was the son of Adjutor and Rose Emma (Roi) Betit.

He graduated in 1943 from Bennington High School and in 1983 from Johnson State College with a business degree.

Mr. Betit enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943, served in Germany and in Japan during the occupation and was discharged in 1948.

He married the former Kathleen Mary O'Sullivan in Boston Sept. 23, 1950. Mrs. Betit died in 2005.

He used his GI benefits to graduate from Boston (Mass.) School of Anatomy and Embalming and became a licensed embalmer and funeral director. In Boston, he studied business at Fisher Junior College while working as office manager at Eastman Funeral Service. In Bennington, he was employed as manager of the Gibney Funeral Home while working at Madkour's Central Market. He was later associated with James Walbridge in the insurance business and subsequently founded Raymond P. Betit Insurance Agency and formed B.C.H. Realty Inc. In 1966, he purchased E.A. French Insurance Agency in North Adams, Mass.

Mr. Betit was a member of the Democratic Party and served as Bennington lister, village auditor and justice of the peace, as well as guardian of several elderly and disabled community members.

He served as lector, Eucharistic minister, parish council member and building commission chairperson at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 307, the Fourth Degree Assembly and a past Faithful Navigator, and American Legion Post 13 and VFW Post 1332 in Bennington.

Survivors include four daughters, Kathleen Yen of Ithaca, N.Y., Elizabeth Turner of Greensboro, N.C., Mary Ellen Keresey of Ridgefield, Conn., and Eileen Riehle of Alexandria, Va.; nine grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will begin with a prayer at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 24, at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, followed by the Mass at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church.

Burial with military honors will be in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, at the funeral home.
