LDS Leader, Lecturer Dies in S.L.
Joseph F. Smith, 65, former patriarch in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, lecturer and interpreter of literature, died Saturday in a Salt Lake clinic after a heart attack.
Mr. Smith, who resided in Honolulu, Hawaii, was visiting Salt Lake City and had attended the wedding Friday of his daughter, Mrs. Lynne E. Partridge, when he was stricken.
Mr. Smith was born Jan. 30, 1899, in Salt Lake City, a son of [Ida] Elizabeth Bowman and Hyrum Mack Smith. He was the grandson of the sixth president of the LDS Church, Joseph Fielding Smith.
HE MARRIED Ruth Pingree, June 5, 1929, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He served an LDS mission to Hawaii in 19[20].
He received a bachelor's degree at the University of Utah and his master's at the University of Illinois, where he was director of the Illinois Theatre Guild.
HE WAS PAST president of the Speech Association of America, the Western Speech Assn. And the Pacific Speech Assn. He was an associate editor of the “Quarterly Journal of Speech.”
He served as patriarch in the LDS Church from 1942 until 194[6].
MR. SMITH was past chairman of the speech department and director of the University Theatre at the University of Utah and was a past chairman of the speech department at the University of Hawaii.
At the time of his death Mr. Smith had just finished teaching a summer Banff School of Fine Arts, in Banff, Alberta, Canada, where he was head of the speech and drama department. He was also senior professor of speech at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu where he has been living since 1947.
MR. SMITH IS survived by his widow; three sons and four daughters: Denis P., Ft. Benning, Ga.; Wayne, London, England; Raoul P., Washington, D.C.: Ruth S. Smith, Provo; Ida Smith, Palo Alto, Calif.; Mrs. Lynne E. Partridge, Kanosh, Millard County; Pauline Smith, Honolulu, Hawaii; a brother, three sisters, Hyrum M. Smith, McLean, Va.; Mrs. Margaret Smith Beecher, Geraldine Smith Ballard and Macksene Smith Rux, all of Salt Lake City.
Funeral services will be conducted in the University LDS Ward Chapel, 160 University St., Monday at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Salt Lake City Cemetery.
