John Potts Davis, Sr married Margaret A Marsh April 19, 1837, in Petersburg, Va. They lived most of their lives there, having 10 children.

John was a shoemaker, and served in the Civil War until Gettysburg, where he was injured. He contiuned to serve the Confederate army by making shoes for the soldiers.

After the war, he continued as a shoemaker and storekeeper until his death.
