John Clark Sherman was born on Echtinaw Island, Coldwater Lake, Michigan to Clifford and Lucy Pearl Echtinaw Sherman. John's twin sisters, Roseline and Esther, were also born on the island. Named after his grandfathers, John Echtinaw and Clark Sherman, John farmed in Ovid Township until he enlisted with the U.S. Army on October 27, 1942. Serving with Hq Btry 1125 AFA Bn, John was in the battles and campaigns of Po Valley, Rome-Arno, and North Apennines. His unit was later attached to the 10th Mountain Army Division – the Ski Soldiers of WWII. While with the 10th Mountain Army Division, on April 14, 1945 near Monte Pastore, Italy, John received the Bronze Star for bravery. After the service, John returned to Coldwater, MI to farm; later marrying Wilma Tase on January 18, 1946.
