He is probably a son of Hugh Canedy and Bathsheba (Baker) Canedy. However, Hugh was born within 1742 or 1744, making him somewhat young to be John's father. John's birth date has been given as early as 1759 and as late as 1765 in various resources.

Children: John Canedy Jr, Mary "Polly" Canedy Lamb(mother of Mary M Lamb Harwood, and possibly mother of Martha W Lamb Burrington), Lucy Canedy Harris, Betsey Canedy, Anna Canedy Howard, William Canedy, Eleanor Canedy Hillman Cady, Emory Canedy, Antes Canedy Thompson, Esther Canedy Lombard, and Olive Canedy Sessions.
