Phillip was diagnosed with ALS on August 18, 2009 and had lived with the disease for the past sixteen months.

He was one of six siblings. On August 2, 1997, he married Kerry Randolph.

Phil attended Lawrence High School until his senior year and graduated from Croswell-Lexington High School in 1991. He went on to receive his BS in Chemistry from Grand Valley State University, where he was a pole vaulter for the track and field team. He received his MS in Chemical Engineering from Penn State University and was most recently employed with CISCO. He was honored to have received the Golden Hammer – a peer-nominated award.

He loved being outside, camping, hiking, visiting parks with his two boys. He became an active member of the triathlon community in 2003.

He is survived by his wife Kerry and their sons, Joshua (six) and Matthew (four); his mother, Kathleen Hutchins, of Lawrence, MI; two brothers, James (Josefina, Julia, Robert) Hutchins, of Columbia, SC and Michael (Jean, Ariel, Greg, Marcus, Gabby, Jessica) Hutchins, of Glenview, IL; three sisters, Susan (Steve, Megan, Emily) Pearson, of Paw Paw, MI, Mary Zoe (Charlie) Hutchins, of Loveland, OH and Kate (Greg) Rhoades, of Cary, NC; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harold and Christine Randolph, of Croswell, MI; two sisters-in-law, Alicia (Gary, Kayla,Wesley) Turner, of Three Rivers, MI and Darci (Mike, Lindsay, Audrey) Hart, of Midland, MI. He also leaves behind several aunts, uncles, cousins, and cherished friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jerry Hutchins, of Lawrence, MI.
