The Gadsden Times, Wednesday, May 23, 1979: Mrs. Bessie Braddy, 79, 111 Lonesome Bend Road, died Tuesday in a local hospital. Funeral Thursday 2 p.m. Collier-Butler Funeral Home and burial in Crestwood Cemetery. Surviving, husband, R.E. Braddy; sons, Jack Marshall, Jonesboro, Georgia; Milton Marshall, Hopkinsville, Kentucky; daughter, Mrs. Louise Hickman, Mobile; 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; step-daughter, Mrs. Wayne Lancaster, Gadsden. Mrs. Braddy was a native of Beaumont, Texas and former resident of Mobile and resided in Etowah County past 13 years. Member of Baptist church. Collier-Butler Funeral Home in charge.

Bessie was a daughter of Fred and Mary Alta Lancaster.


Bessie was adopted out to a man and his wife named David and Esther N Phenix when she wass 6 years old in 1905. The adoption wasnt legal and she lived with this family until she married. Her brothers didn't find her until she was married and had children.
William O Lancaster was staying in the same school she was in when David and Esther came and got Bessie, It is unknown what happened to William but he may have been adopted by an unknown family too.
