James A. Alger, 79, of the Morganville section of Marlboro Township, died Tuesday at the Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, New Jersey. He was a packing engineer for seven years with the Penn Pac Corporation, Warminster, Pennsylvania, retiring in 1980. He was a retired Army lieutenant colonel and served during World War II in the Philippine campaign. He was a member of Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He was a member of, and served as secretary for the Keyport-Matawan Church Bowling League and was a member of the Fort Monmouth Officers Club and the 309 Reserve Officers Association in Washington, D.C. He was also a member of the Retired Officers Association also in Washington.

Mr. Alger was born in New York and lived in Keyport all his life until moving to Morganville 20 years ago. Surviving are his, wife, Marion Scherff Alger; a son, Bruce Alger, Dallas; a daughter, Holly Van Meter, Morganville; three sisters, Sophie Gevas, Keyport; Bertha Kusulas, Astoria, N.Y., and Stella Taros, Cranford Township; II grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.

Bedle Funeral Home, Keyport, is in charge of arrangements.
