Fred Smith
Fred Smith, son of Charles and Lucinda Lockwood Smith, was born in Richardson County, Nebraska, on July 28, 1878 and died in Sabetha, Kansas, on October 11, 1965. He grew to manhood in Richardson County and was married to Carie Brougher on November 4, 1897. together they continued to make their home in Richardson County, Nebraska. To this union were born four children: Mrs. Lloyd Keim, Sabetha; Charles Smith, Sabetha; Mrs. Zuella Jurden, Bern; and Vilas Smith, Kansas City, Missouri.
While living in Richardson County, Mr. and Mrs. Smith joined and attended the Zion Reformed Church. In 1955 Mr and Mrs. Smith moved to Bern, Kansas. Here they united in Christian Fellowship with the Evangelical United Brethren Church where they continued in active relationship until Mrs Smith's death on August 12, 1964.
Mr Smith leaves to mourn his death; two sons and two daughters; three sisters, Mrs. Olive Ayers, Humboldt, Nebraska, Mrs. Helen Stalder, Salem, Nebraska, Mrs Ardith French, Dawson, Nebraska; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren and many friends.

Memorial services were held at the Popkess Chapel on Wednesday, October 13, 1965 at 10;30 a.m. with Rev. Karl Kuglin of Bern, officiating. Mrs. W. R. Popkess provided the organ music. Casket bearers were Bill Strahm, Earl Hightower, Richard Sheik, Lloyd Keim Jr.., Frank Stalder, Hugh Brougher.
