Walter N. Duke was born in Wilcox, County, Alabama, in 1840. He volunteered on May 6, 1861, and joined Company C, 5th Regiment, under Capt. Goode of Pineville, Alabama, serving until the end of the war, including 8 months as a prisoner of war. Upon his return home he married Bonita Jane Knowles, and the couple had 4 children: Mrs. Mollie E. Johnson of Logansport, LA, Ferdinand H. Duke of Mt. Enterprise, George W. Duke of Tulsa, OK, and Bonita J. (Mrs. L. W.) Womack of Paxton.
After his wife died he married Martha Jane "Mattie" Byrd on February 3, 1875, and they had 9 children, though 2 died young. Surviving children: Mrs. Lula Hurst of Paxton, Bettie Seigler of Joaquin, Cornelia S. "Neally" Davis, Jodie Hairgrove, Georgia Alford Peddy, and Clara Bagwell all of Tenaha, and J. W. Duke of Westville, OK. The couple moved to Texas by 1880.
His obituary describes Mr. Duke as "a prosperous farmer," who lived in the Ramah community. About 2 years prior to his death, Mr. and Mrs. Duke moved to Tenaha to live with their daughter, Clara Bagwell. Mr. Duke died there after being ill for 7 weeks.
