Civil War Union Soldier serving as a Private in Battery B, 1st New Jersey Light Artillery. Enlisted Sept. 3, 1861; Re-enlisted Mar. 8, 1864 and Discharged June 16, 1865.

"Clark's" Battery B, 1st NJ Light Artillery fought at Gettysburg near the Peach Orchard from 2 until 7 o'clock on July 2, 1863 firing 1,300 rounds of ammunition, Captain A. Judson Clark commanding. Engaged in 26 battles, including all the important actions on the Peninsula, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Appomattox.

Post-war, Judge Michael Hanifen wrote and published the "History of Battery B, First New Jersey Artillery" in 1905.

Biography:

Michael was born in Killarney, Ireland, May 10, 1840 and came with his parents to this country in 1850. Mr. and Mrs. Hanifen died of cholera in New York City in 1851; then for two years Michael was a street Arab. From 1854 to 1861 he lived on a farm in New Jersey. When the war broke out he enlisted in Battery B, 1st New Jersey artillery, serving until 1865. Mr. Hanifen retired from the plastering business in 1894, when he was elected police magistrate. He was the first Republican to hold that office. At present he is justice of the peace and also a pension attorney. He has been a member of the G.A.R. since 1868 and is a past commander of Seth C. Earl post. He was one of the organizers of the Ottawa Land League, is an Odd Fellow, and member of the Episcopalian church. In 1872, December 11th, Mr. Hanifen was married to Elizabeth Walker. They have one son, John W., born December 28, 1885. He is junior member of the firm of White & Hanifen, architects.

HANIFEN - Judge Michael Hanifen, 79 years of age, one of the most prominent members of the Ottawa G.A.R. and one of this cities most prominent citizens, died Sunday afternoon at the Ryburn Memorial hospital after an extended illness. He was one of the best known and most widely respected residents of Ottawa. Judge Hanifen was born in Killarney, Ireland, emigrating to the United States in 1850. In August, 1861 he enlisted in Clark's Battery B of New Jersey and served with the Army of the Potomac until the end of the war. In 1867 he located in Ottawa where he has since resided. His marriage to Miss Elizabeth Walker took place in 1872. Mrs. Hanifen passed away in April 1918. The deceased is survived by one son, John W. Hanifen of Ottawa, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Shoas of Rant, Indiana. Funeral Tuesday. Burial in Ottawa Avenue cemetery.
