Her father was Sahak Giritlian and she is known to have lived in Kirsehir, Turkey, as an adult, but it is not known if she was born there or moved there later. She married Parsegh Baltaian who was the chauffeur to important Turks in Kirsehir. Through these contacts he was warned of the impending Armenian Genocide and was told to flee. Thanks to her husband's position they were able to be passed off as Turks and escaped to the relatively safer big city, Constantinople. Gulazar's father Sahak also escaped and lived in Constantinople, it's unknown if Gulazar's mother did as well or even her name. In Kirsehir, Parsegh and Gulazar had had four children, Satenig, Kerry, Zarouhi, and Zabel. In 1920, Parsegh moved to America to make a better life for himself and his family, whom he brought over soon after. Kerry arrived in America in November 1920. Gulazar along with Zarouhi and Zabel left Constantinople on June 26, 1921 on the ship Gul Djemal and arrived at Ellis Island on July 18, 1921. The Baltaians settled at 510-514 S. 13th Street in Philadelphia, and then had one more son there Manuel. Parsegh died in 1944 and Gulazar ten years later, by which time she was a great-grandmother.
