Vaughn Davis, 102, of Connell, WA, and recently of Pasco, WA, passed away Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011 in Pasco.

He was born Feb. 29, 1908 in Ashton, Idaho, to Stephen and Mary Green Davis, the sixth of their nine children, and graduated from high school there. He married Helen Biorn on Dec. 3, 1931. They had two sons and a daughter.

In Ashton, he farmed, delivered mail, drove school bus/sleigh and cleaned the REA building. He also served on the Fremont County reorganization board to consolidate several schools, and was treasurer of the school board.

In 1954, he moved his family from Ashton to Connell to farm. He worked for Connell Sand and Gravel briefly while developing the land. Vaughn served on agricultural committees, Soil Conservation Service and ASC and the South Columbia Basin Irrigation District board, and was chairman of the Grange Supply board in Connell. After retiring, he managed the Connell Ward LDS welfare farm.

Vaughn was fun-loving and enjoyed people, especially children. He always had candy in his pocket for them and honored a play date as strictly as a business appointment, following the old adage that one's word is one's bond. He liked to run foot races with his grandchildren and took the whole family roller skating on his and Helen's 50th wedding anniversary. Vaughn was punctual and generally frugal, but loved new cars and bought many, delighting in racing his sons and nephews.

His greatest pleasure was driving, especially if the trip included cherry pie or strawberry shortcake. In earlier years, dancing was his passion. He also enjoyed reading, traveling, attending Connell High School basketball games and the community concert series and was a member of the LDS church.

He is survived by his daughter, Regina (LeRoy) LaMar, of Poulsbo, WA; son, Craig (Sue), of Surprise, AZ; daughter-in-law, Marcellene (Larry) Hueter, of Connell; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; son, Terrill; parents; siblings; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at the LDS church at 350 E. Fulton in Connell. Closed casket viewing will be at 10 a.m. at the same location. Interment following the funeral will be in Connell's Mountain View Cemetery.
