In 1951 during his first Indianapolis 500, he was fourth fastest qualifier and completed 93 laps before dropping out.He was awarded 18th place.
Carl failed to qualify for the 1952 race but came back in 1953, driving the McNamara #73 and started 19th. On lap 69 he spun to avoid hitting Tony Bettenhausen and as he was feeling unwell he made his way back to the pits to be replaced by relief driver Bob Scott. Scott went on and finished the race in 11th, scoring points on behalf of Scarborough. Carl was in a critical state and was taken to the infield hospital suffering from heat exhaustion. A few hours later, Carl Scarborough died. He was 38 years old.His body was sent to Keego Harbor, Michigan, where funeral services were held with burial in Perry Mount Park, in Pontiac, Michigan on June 3rd, 1953.
