Jack was born in 1927 and grew up in Massachusetts and Rhode Island during the Great Depression and World War II. He graduated from Phillips Academy in 1944 and entered the Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps at Williams College. After his freshman year, he transferred to Brown University where he graduated in 1948 and was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy Reserve.

He served first aboard the aircraft carrier USS Leyte (CV-32) before entering Submarine School in 1950; after which he served aboard six submarines, commanding the USS Barracuda (SST-3) from 1963 to 1965. He also commanded Submarine Division 122, based in Key West from 1968-1969.

In between sea duty assignments he served in Naval Intelligence postings as assistant naval attache in the Philippines, and in staff assignments with Submarine Force Atlantic, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Naval Postgraduate School, and Defense Intelligence Agency. He commanded the Naval Scientific & Technical Intelligence Center (STIC) and Naval Intelligence Support Center (NISC) in Washington DC prior to his retirement in 1973.

He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, 25 Apr 2011 and was survived by his wife Jouett, his children Frederic, Stephen, and Elizabeth, and seven grandchildren.
