---Funeral services for James T. Ator, 76, of Des Moines, Iowa, formerly of La Plata were held at 1:30 this afternoon (Sunday, Mar. 11, 1984) in the Pollock Funeral Chapel, La Plata. The Rev. Timothy McClain, pastor of the La Plata Presbyterian Church, conducted the services. Burial was in the La Plata Cemetery.
---Mr. Ator died at 2:30 Friday morning (March 9, 1984) in a hospital in Des Moines, Iowa where he had been a patient since February 21. He had been in failing health several months.
---Born May 25, 1907, in Griggsville, Illinois, he was the son of James Lyman and Mabel Vaughn Ator. On December 25, 1931, in La Plata he married Adah Maitland who survives. Also surviving are one son, James D. Ator of Ft. Wayne Indiana; two granddaughters and two sisters, Ruby E. Howk of Des Moines, Iowa and Norine Swearingen of Denver, Colorado.
---He was preceded in death by two sisters, Pearl James and Lucille Bach.
---Mr. Ator attended La Plata School and was a graduate of Northeast Missouri State University. From 1932 until 1936 he taught Industrial Arts and was the coach of La Plata High School. He then went to Bethany where he also taught Industrial Arts and served as coach from 1936 until 1941. He served as civilian teacher for the United States Navy in Jacksonville, Florida from 1941 through 1945. He moved to Des Moines, Iowa where he was coach and Industrial Arts teacher from 1945 until his retirement in 1971.
---Mr. Ator was a member of the First Methodist Church of Des Moines, Iowa.
---Bearers were: Jerry Swanson, Dr. Dennis Denger, John Russel, Cleo Bown, Lee Bunch and Garvin Smith.
