Andy B. Anderson, 59, passed away Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001 at his home in Leverett, Mass.

A memorial service was held at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 4, in the Memorial Hall on the University of Massachusetts Campus. A private burial followed at the Wildwood Cemetery.

Andy was born June 10, 1941, in Artesia, New Mexico to Andrew R. and Margaret Birnie Anderson, who preceded him in death.

He was a 1959 graduate of Artesia High School and was a member of the 1957 New Mexico high school football state championship team.

He received his BA in 1963 from Southern Methodist University and his PhD in 1967 from Tulane University.

He was a professor at Purdue University from 1967 until 1975 before moving to the Amherst area and becoming a professor of sociology at the University of Massachusetts. He had served as the senior scientist for the Gallup Organization of Princeton, N.J., since 1995.

Andy authored and co-authored many publications, including the Handbook of Survey Research, Short-Term Contracting and Careers, Disarticulation and Human Welfare in Less Developed Countries, Environmental Equity: The Demographic of Dumping and A Longitudinal Analysis of Environmental Equity in Communities With Hazard Waste Facilities.

His numerous awards included the Distinguished Teacher Award, nominee as Professor of the Year in 1989 and the Outstanding Service Award from the Gallup Organization.

He was also Boss Goat of the North Amherst-Leverett Goat Ropers Association.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Moriconi Anderson of the family home; daughters MarJane Glazebrook of Edgewood, N.M., and Jennifer Anderson-Tuttle of St. Bonifacius, Minn.; step-daughters Kisa Takesue of Providence, R.I., and Kimi Takesue of Philadelphia, Pa.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
