BUCKFIELD — Guy W. Lovejoy, 75, died of cancer Jan. 27, peacefully at his home, surrounded by his beloved family.

He was born in Buckfield, Sept. 23, 1935, at his grandparent's home on Streaked Mountain. He was the son of Wendell and Leonide (McIntyre) Lovejoy. He was raised in Buckfield with his loving sister Patricia Dreher. He graduated from Buckfield High School.

He married Shirley A. Gagnon on Oct. 8, 1956. They had a very happy and adventurous life together for 54 years. Together they raised three wonderful children. Guy enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1955. He traveled overseas several times, including a tour in Vietnam in 1971 to 1972. He retired after 20 years of service.

He was a member of the John D. Long American Legion, he was very proud to serve his country. In 1975, Guy returned to his home in Buckfield with his family. He was part-owner of the Buckfield Garage along with his cousin Perley Lovejoy.

He worked as a mechanic in the Norway-South Paris area. He also drove for Community Concepts until his illness in October 2010. He cared very much about his community and enjoyed his many friends.

In his spare time, he loved to travel and go camping with his wife and good friends and relatives, Dan Douglass and the late Martha Douglass, along with his daughter Anita and her husband Jorge. He will be truly missed by everyone. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed watching and feeding the wild life in his backyard.

Guy loved to snowmobile and was active in the Streaked Mountaineers Snowmobile Club, along with his wife Shirley as they were always together. He loved their trips to Nokomis, Fla., San Antonio, Texas, Nashville, Tenn., and Nova Scotia to visit his family.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley A. Lovejoy; his sister, Patricia Dreher and her husband, Dan, of San Antonio, Texas; his daughter, Cathy Alling of Nokomis, Fla.; a son, Michael D. Lovejoy and his wife, Karen, of Buckfield; a daughter, Anita F. Caraballo and her husband, Jorge, of Limington. He was very active in his grandchildren's lives. Grandpa will be greatly missed by his seven grandchildren, David Lovejoy, Rita Lovejoy Farren, Paul Newton, Jessica Newton, Brad Samson, Ben Lovejoy and Vanessa Perkins; and seven great-grandchildren, with another on the way. Guy also loved his beloved cat Khittie.
