She was born and grew up in Lily Pond, about halfway down the road between Monticello and Otsego, and graduated from Monticello High School and Normal School, a kind of teacher training. She taught school, and after the death of her mother, she moved north to Crow Wing County to accept a position there. Her father moved with her and purchased land along County Road 1 in Swanberg, about 11 miles east of Pine River. There she met (George) Marvin Peterson, whom she married in Brainerd. They settled on Marvin's farm just down the road from her father and Marvin's parents, and raised four children during the Great Depression.
