George R. "Skip" Adams, 76, a longtime, well-known resident of 210 Nesbit St., Rocky Grove, died peacefully at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011, in his home with his family at his side, following a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born April 23, 1934, in Oil City, a beloved son of the late Harold P. and Emma J. Cupples Adams.
He was a 1952 graduate of St. Michael High School in Greenville.
Following his high school graduation, Mr. Adams proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Air Force. He attained staff sergeant during his term of duty attached to peacetime duty following the Korean War as a member of the 1st A & E Maintenance Squadron.
Following his honorable discharge, Mr. Adams was a familiar face working for many years as a clerk at the U.S. Post Office in Franklin until his retirement.
He was an active and faithful member of St. Patrick Church in Franklin.
He was a member for many years of the Franklin Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #110 and was a longtime member of the Postal Clerk's Union.
Most important to him, though, was his family, of whom he was always most proud. He cherished the fun times he was able to share with his large family and friends and most especially, the time he was able to be a part of his grandchildren's lives.
He was married Nov. 10, 1956, in St. Michael Church in Greenville to the former Linda L. Heckathorn, who survives.
In addition to his beloved wife of 54 years, he is survived by his children: Steven R. Adams and his wife Beverly of Havelock, N.C., Debra A. Bankston and her husband Guy of Palmerston North, New Zealand, Michelle M. Mahoney and her husband Patrick of Rocky Grove, Kimberlee Burkett of Rocky Grove, Patrick M. Adams and his wife Jill of Franklin and George E. Adams and his wife Mary Kay of Pittsburgh.
Also surviving are his grandchildren: Nikki Heasley and her husband Jason, Adam Mahoney, Daniel Mahoney, Logan Bankston, Ashley Baughman, Steven Adams, Erin Bankston, Matthew Adams, Quincy Adams, Hayden Adams and Elizabeth Adams and a great-grandson: Ryder Mitchell.
Also surviving is his sister-in-law, Delores Adams of Greenville in addition to many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Emanuele and Phyllis Marks; and three brothers, Paul, Harold and Robert Adams.
In accordance of his wishes, there will be no public visitation.
Interment will be in St. Patrick Cemetery.
