Mary Jane (Andrus) Bair was born December 9, 1862 in Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Her mother, identity unknown, died when she was three weeks old. Her father was Jerome Andrus, son of Darwin Andrus (#70619718). After the death of her birth mother, Mary Jane was left to "kindly relatives, Mr. and Mrs. Jared Beardsley, who adopted her as their own on January 3, 1863."

The Beardsley family moved to Iowa, which is where Mary Jane met and married Michael T. Bair on May 15, 1878. They moved to Kansas in a covered wagon, and raised a family in Rooks County. Together they had sixteen children.
